Dress styles of the 1840's were meant to emphasize the graceful and feminine features of women. The low, pointed waistline emphasized a thinner waist while organ pleats on the skirt lent a soft, even fullness. Worn over several stiff petticoats a dome like shape would have been achieved.

Dolman Mantle Passimenterie / Chenille Trims Circa 1880
Designed to be worn over the fashionable bustle dresses of the 1870s and 1880s, dolmans were intended for warmth in the out of doors. The main fabric is an aqua silk plush with the chenille being dyed a slightly darker green/blue shade.
